There aren't many Hudson Valley estates in laid-back Ulster County and it's exceptionally rare for one to come to market. Ashokan House is perched in the foothills of the Catskills with panoramic views of the reservoir that lends its name. Sited amid towering pines & dramatic rock outcroppings, the 11,000 square foot mansion was designed for entertaining, yet also offers intimate spaces, which allow it to function as a nurturing family home. The grand living, dining & game rooms flow effortlessly into each other and feature soaring 14-foot ceilings, rich woods, fireplaces & sophisticated architectural detail. A sprawling all-stainless steel kitchen, scaled for preparing for a crowd, is complemented by a cozier family kitchen and adjacent breakfast room for casual gatherings & weeknight meals. A first-floor bedroom suite opens to a private porch, one of many dreamy, romantic outdoor spaces dotted throughout the property. Part way up to the guest wing, the stairway veers to a classic, mahogany-paneled study/library with a dazzling view of the reservoir, one of many perches within the home from which it's visible. The guest wing houses a suite of rooms, including a bedroom with sitting area, office space, lavish bathroom, sauna and access to a large elevated patio & the view. The home's grand staircase leads to a skylit atrium, a sitting room of sorts, from which 3 additional bedroom suites are accessed, including the opulent master, a luxe space that's made for relaxing, pampering or dreaming. The space is huge, incorporating a cherry-paneled sitting room, 2 fireplaces, private outdoor space facing the reservoir, all-white bathroom with sunken whirlpool tub, sauna, separate facilities and lots of closet space. Each bedroom in the home has its own bathroom and most have fireplaces; there are eleven fireplaces in all. The Spy House, also known as the DuMond House or the Guard House, was built some time between about 1680 and about 1720. It may be the oldest continuously occupied private residence in New York State. It was built by the DuMond/VanEtten family, and in the 1930s was purchased by the Kent family. It was serving as the local militia company's guardhouse when a British soldier captured as a spy was held here for several days before being hanged from an apple tree across the street. The house has been expanded several times over the centuries, so some of the interior walls were originally exterior ones. Some of the windows and doors are believed to be original. The property is on Town water (from Kent Springs) and has a septic system. Because of its history as the village post office, it also has a few parking spaces. There are very few supporting interior walls, so the space is very flexible. Rooms have been added and reconfigured often over the centuries. People are often surprised at how much larger the house is once inside, compared to how small it appears from the street. The post office addition, 700 square feet on the ground floor with a standup attic, was erected in the early 1950s. It became the village post office in 1953 and served until 1986. Under Hurley's zoning rules governing the historic district, a special use permit could be issued so that this space could be used for professional offices, an artist's studio, or a B&B, but not as a retail shop. The second floor, of about 1,000 square feet, has been partitioned over the years into several rooms of various sizes: One large master bedroom two small bedrooms with an open space between; a small room that has been used as a nursery and playroom; and a large bathroom, as well as a number of closets and storage areas. The bricks in the chimney were made in nearby Rosendale; there were formerly many brickworks in this region. There is a small attic above this floor accessible by the stepladder on the ceiling near the attic door. 1.4+/- arces this amazing home sits on in the heart of Hurley. Come take a look. 3 bedroom 2 full baths with 3636 sq ft. 3 beatuiful fireplaces grace this beauty on the Main St in Hurley.
